Born into a musical family in Quincy, Fla., in 1962, country star Billy Dean loved country music from the beginning, later giving up a basketball scholarship to a Mississippi college in order to pursue his dream of becoming a country singer. Several years of touring the Gulf Coast and working as a professional songwriter paid off when Dean won Best Male Vocalist Award on the 1988 season of "Star Seach," leading to a record deal and frequent work writing commercial jingles. Dean's 1990 debut album, Young Man, spawned the hit "Somewhere in My Broken Heart," marking the beginning of a string of Top 10 hits that included "Only Here for a Little While," "Billy the Kid" and "Only the Wind," among others. Billy Dean's latest album, It's What I Do, was released on Capitol Records in 1996.
