For the past two years, rock fans all over North America were
treated to the recognizable sounds of Big People. Formed as an assemblage of
former “classic rock heavyweights”, the band in its current line-up consists of
: Derek St. Holmes (formerly of the Ted Nugent Band) on vocals, Jeff Carlisi
(formerly of .38 Special) on guitar, and Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel) on drums,
Chase Chitty (Pat Travers Band) on Bass and Rob Wilson / Guitar. The overall
effect is a “best of” mix of classic rock.
Big People toured throughout the summer of 2000, performing
at various summer music festivals and state fairs, from their home base of
Atlanta, Georgia to the Alaska State Fair, with stops in Wisconsin, Illinois,
and North Dakota in between. The summer set list includes “Stranglehold”, ”Just
What the Doctor Ordered” and “Hey Baby” performed by Derek St. Holmes from the
Ted Nugent days, and “Hold On Loosely”, “Rockin’ Into The Night” and “So Caught
Up In You” from Jeff Carlisi’s .38 Special repertoire, along with “You May Be
Right” courtesy of Billy Joel.
According to Derek St. Holmes, Big People’s working theme is
“a bunch of guys who genuinely care about each other while having some fun
sharing our music”. Fans have confirmed that this feeling of camaraderie
translates into the band’s music and
performances. Much of this is captured on an upcoming live CD, based on material
from this summer’s best shows. In addition, fans can soon look forward to the
first Big People studio album, which will feature the collaborative talents of
the band members. Both CD’s are expected to be released in 2001.
