Alannah's musical appeal transcends not only cultural, but also generational boundaries -- her audiences are often dominated by fans over 55 who line up for hours to get front row seats, and children are mesmerized by her brand of rock. "The older fans appreciate a sound that was lost for a while," she says, "and the young kids never got a chance to hear anyone like Janis Joplin." Being a woman in the music business necessitates a toughness that Alannah says has always been there, but her pale skin reveals an underlying softness. "People misinterpret me as being a hard rock wench with no feelings. Once they work with me, they realize I'm fragile like everyone else." Her vocal versatility ranges from delicate plea to guttural demand, evoking an image so sexy that Linda Lingerie enlisted Alannah for a series of billboards to launch a new line this fall. Alannah, the rock star -- wild yet delicate, gentle yet strong, capable yet vulnerable -- exuding sex, both feminine and raw. Alannah's artistic sense permeates her home furnishings, which reflect the contrasts in her nature. A neon cactus is one of the modern L.A. treasures that complement exotic primitive pieces, such as a Persian teak screen, Peruvian painted armoires and an oxen yoke. Her coffee table is a 500-year-old Argentine barn door, complete with wooden hinge. Alannah respects the artistic beauty in the religious artifacts she's collected from diverse philosophies, including Madonnas, rosary beads and a wall hanging representing Erzulie, Mistress of the God of Voodoo. Although not religious, the earthy Alannah is spiritual: "I found my faith my own way." A picture taken with Pierre Trudeau and a tambourine signed by Robert Plant are among the items of memorabilia in this welcome refuge overlooking Lake Ontario. Even the sounds of seagulls and lapping water evoke a restful comfort in Alannah's hectic life. Her latest album, Alannah, will be re-released with IRS Records (headed by Miles Copeland), and will include two new songs that Allanah co-wrote on a recent songwriting sojourn at Miles' castle in France. More songwriting, tours and a musical comedy TV project are also in Alannah's future. Alannah Myles knows what she wants and goes for it with ferocious confidence.
